Park days are probably our very favorite low cost family activity ever.  We are incredibly blessed to live in walking distance of 2 huge parks that are rarely overpopulated which means the kids usually have the place to themselves.  So fun.  To prepare for our seasonal trips to the park (YAY Spring!) I always keep a park bag ready to grab so we can run out the door whenever we have time.   Even though our kids have been at these parks many times, the first park trip of the season is always like the first park trip EVER for the kids.  FREEDOM from the winter cold!!

Living in Colorado we never really know what to expect for Spring Break when it comes to the weather.  Unfortunately, a lot of the kids Spring Break was rainy and snowy.  Now, we cannot complain too much because Colorado has been super dry so we SO needed the moisture.  So on the few days of Spring Break that were nice and warm we made sure to be outside for the day.  Our first park day of the season was a huge success and we had a ton of fun.  Even though a day at the park should be all fun and games, with out the right preparation it can end in tears and frustration.  Hey parenting - you rock our world sometimes.

Tips On Having a Great Family Day At The Park:

1.  Pack for a long stay.  Have a dedicated park day bag.  This bag will be perfect for any amount of time at the park.  Fill it with necessities to make sure you are not having to cut your fun short just because something was left at home. Be prepared!

2.  Bring snacks. Find snacks that the kids will enjoy and that will help them refuel for some more fun at the park. Individually packages items work great. Teddy Soft Bakes are a great option, my kids love the playful nature of them and they taste great.

3.  Water is a must.  Those kids run and play hard, make sure you bring water for them to cool off if needed.  Teagan throws the biggest fits when she NEEDS A DRINK!!!  Don't let the lack of water ruin a fun day.

4. Pack a camera.  Most of us carry our phones with us all the time, instead of checking facebook on your phone, take pictures!  Outside park pictures are the best.  They always capture true smiles and fun.

5. Bring a few outdoor games.  Sure the park has a playground but to extend the fun, pack other outdoor activities.  Good examples: a kite, sidewalk chalk, a football, a Frisbee and bubbles!

6. Tell the kids ahead of time how long you’ll be staying. Telling the kids it is time to go home is the worst part of a day at the park.  Kids are so smart, give them the amount of time they will be able to play and make sure you give a countdown warning of when it is getting close to having to head home. This will, hopefully, help not have any meltdowns.

7.  Don't forget the Sunscreen.  The season has changed, trade in the sweatshirts for sunscreen.  Nothing is worse than getting that first sunburn all because you are not used to the season of sunscreen.  Keep this in your park bag as you never know when that sun will be burning!

8.  Have fun!!  Encourage your kids to be playful, have fun and enjoy their park day but also remember that you too - Mom and Dad - can be playful with your kids.  Get out there, chase, jump, go down slides and enjoy the beautiful fresh air.

A few weeks ago I introduced you all to one of our newest favorite on-the-go snack and treat for the kids, Teddy Soft BakesThese are great single serving treats that are not only adorable because of the teddy bear shape but they are snacks that I am happy to enjoy with my kids - seriously, these treats are totally adult approved too! YUM! After some fun in the sun, the kids always need a little snack to get them moving for a few more hours, Teddy Soft Bakes are great for that mid-day snack.

Finding snacks and treats that the kids enjoy is always a great success in my books.  I remember the first time I showed my kids these little adorable treats - seriously, they are so cute.  They were very excited to try them.  They even played with the bear shaped bakes before diving in! Not to mention, the afternoon after sending one to school for Jude's lunch he told me all of his lunch buddies were hoping their parents let them try Teddy Soft Bakes for their lunch treat!  My kids are a little weird about trying new foods but these Teddy Soft Bakes were a hit from the time they saw the box.  It is important to let kiddo experience and discover new foods and we are trying to be better about that.

Those smiles and laughs, I wish you could hear this picture.  It is so fun to see Jude and Teagan playing together.  These ages are a lot of fun...don't get me wrong, we have plenty of fighting but these moments make up for it.

Remember, playfulness is fun for all ages!

  2. Number 6 is DEFINITELY our downfall!! Telling my kids AHEAD of time how long we will stay at the park and WHEN we will be leaving is a meltdown waiting to happen!!! I have to "prep" them in the car before hand hope that they remember...usually it still ends up in "Mom! your the bad guy!" Great tips and post!

  3. ALWAYS pack snacks! Ha ha. I used to live in CO :) We moved to Idaho and I haven't explored enough to find the parks yet. I really need to.

  5. We love spending time at the park. We're lucky enough to have a nice one only a block away from our house, so we take the kids there often. Snacks are a must too.

  6. My son always loved teddy crackers. These are a good addition to their line! I agree with you on setting time limits. It's good for them to know the expected time, or number of times you're doing something. (3 times on each, etc.)
