Ash Ketchum - Pokemon DIY Halloween Costume

I will never be the mom that can sew a Halloween costume for her kids, look, honestly I can't even sew a button on my husbands dress shirts.  Somehow I totally missed that lesson growing up.  Oh well...I will teach myself one day.  Now, I have found ways to still create projects like drapes made out of a shower curtain in Jude room (yes I am that good), without picking up a needle and thread.  So, today, I am excited to share and EASY DIY project that I completed this weekend for Halloween!!

Jude is a Pokemon obsessed boy, has been for about a year now, so it isn't surprising that he requested to be Ash Ketchum - the Pokemon trainer for Halloween.  You might remember his birthday party too, that was quite fun and we had a ton of great Pokemon creations, check it out if your kiddos are Pokemon fans like Jude.

We started looking for an Ash Ketchum costume a few months ago, but we didn't really find anything we loved, so I decided to give my no sewing DIY talent a shot this year.  Honestly, you need to give me a pat on the back for this one!  Haha, kidding!!!  Sort of....

Directions:

1.  Start by cutting off the sleeves of the hoodie.  Ash wears a jacket that looks like a vest.

2.  Using the yellow duct tape, create "buttons" at the top of the zipper.

3.  Add yellow duct tape to outline the bottom of the hoodie as well as the pockets.

4.  Add the Pikachu plush to the shoulder of the hoodie using a safety pin.

5.  To pull all of these items together, have your child start by putting on the white polo, then layering the polo with a solid colored t-shirt.  Make sure the collar of the polo is pulled out from the t-shirt.

6.  Put on the hoodie "vest", your child can wear this zipped up or kept open.

7.  Put on hatgloves and belt.

8.  SO EASY!  Costume complete.

Other Tips - you can make your own Ash gloves with duct tape and green fingerless gloves and also, create your own hat using a plain "trucker hat" and marker.  This would save you a little extra money.

Jude loves the way his costume came out, he cannot wait to show his friends and go Trick or Treating this Halloween!  While I cut some corners with buying some items we still saved money on this costume and we love it even more than the pre-made Ash Ketchum costumes we found.  Like I said in my tips above, you could really do a lot more on your own to save even more money!

What will your kids be going as for Halloween this year?

  2. That is a cute costume and how clever you are to make that. I remember dressing up in old clothes and going as whatever I could dress like.

  4. We don't have kids at home but WE are going to have our own costume party and a contest for the best and most creative one. :) Becoming Pikachu is a great choice for kids. This character is really cute and adorable.

  5. I hear you! My mother sewed all the time when I was really small. She made us matching dresses and entire outfits! Then she just stopped! I was never taught how to do these things myself. Now days it seems more expensive to sew our own clothing anyway. I think your son's outfit is perfect! He looks just like Ash!

  6. Halloween is such a fun time of year. Good for you for coming up with a winning costume that your son just loves. Not always so easy to do. Can't wait to hear about his friends reaction to his wonderful costume.

  7. Haha. Very good! I started sewing when I needed to cut the drapes I bought short. I was so proud of it. Then I started literally shortening the girls costumes for their birthdays because Disney dress costumes don't come in size 1 and went from there. Still not perfect but it will do. Yours looks great even without a sewing machine. Very inventive!!!

  8. I'm all about DIY costumes. While I can't do it myself, my mom is usually pretty good about helping me with an idea. I personally like DIY better because they turn out better than the plastic junky store styles.

  9. So cute! Normally my mother-in-law makes my kids' Halloween costumes but she isn't going to be able to this year. I love how easily your Pokémon costume came together. Makes it feel possible to try it myself.
